The Marine Ecosystem is characterized by a warm sea, coral reefs and long un-spoilt sandy beaches. The Eastern Shore Ecosystem with lush forest on tall dunes, grassy plains and a variety of wetlands, is the wilderness area that we visit on our trail. Lake St Lucia, which is South Africa's largest natural water body. The Mkuze swamps, which is a huge reed and papyrus wetland. The Western Shore, which is a dry savanna and thornveld.

St Lucia is also an important stopping point for migrating birds as well as a breeding area for fish, prawns and turtles.
